Abstract Background: Fabry disease is an X-chromosomally inherited lysosomal storage disorder leading to accumulation of glycosphingolipids, mainly globotriaosylceramide (ceramide-trihexoside, Gb3). Concentrations of Gb3 in plasma and urine have been used to diagnose Fabry disease and to monitor enzyme replacement therapy with recombinant α-galactosidase. Determination of microcystins in biological samples by matrix solid-phase dispersion and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry

A method for the detection and quantification of the microcystins (MCs)-MC-LR, MC-RR and MC-YR-in biological samples by matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) has been developed. The optimum extraction conditions were 500 mg of liver or kidney, C18 bonded silica as dispersant, and a mixture methanol-water (70:30) as eluent. The MCs were determined by liquid chromatography electrospray mass spectrometry (LC/ES/MS). Recoveries of biological extracts at three different spiked levels (1-10 mg kg(-1)) ranged from 40.5 to 87.0% in liver, and from 52.5 to 74.5 in kidney. Trace elements in scalp hair of children chronically exposed to volcanic activity (Mt. Etna, Italy)

Abstract The aim of this survey was to use scalp hair as a biomonitor to evaluate the environmental exposure to metals and metalloids of schoolchildren living around the Mt. Etna area, and to verify whether the degree of human exposure to trace elements is subject to changes in local environmental factors. Twenty trace elements were determined in 376 samples of scalp hair from schoolboys (11–13 years old) of both genders, living in ten towns located around the volcanic area of Mt. Etna (Sicily). Online reference database of European Y-chromosomal short tandem repeat (STR) haplotypes

The reference database of highly informative Y-chromosomal short tandem repeat (STR) haplotypes (YHRD), available online at http://ystr.charite.de, represents the largest collection of male-specific genetic profiles currently available for European populations. By September 2000, YHRD contained 4688 9-locus (so-called "minimal") haplotypes, 40% of which have been extended further to include two additional loci. Establishment of YHRD has been facilitated by the joint efforts of 31 forensic and anthropological institutions. Hepatocytes cultured in alginate microspheres: an optimized technique to study enzyme induction.

An important application of hepatocyte cultures is identification of drugs acting as inducers of biotransformation enzymes that alter metabolic clearance of other therapeutic agents. In the present study we optimized an in vitro system with hepatocytes cultured in alginate microspheres that allow studies of enzyme induction with excellent sensitivity. Induction factors obtained with standard inducers, such as 3-methylcholanthrene or phenobarbital, were higher compared to those with conventional hepatocyte co-cultures on collagen coated dishes. Accuracy of CT and MRI to assess resection margins in primary malignant bone tumours having histology as the reference standard.

AIM To evaluate the accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) in assessing the resection margins of primary malignant bone tumours. MATERIALS AND METHODS Resected primary malignant bone tumour specimens removed from 46 patients (27 male; mean age: 48±22 years) were imaged using MRI (fat-saturated proton density-weighted and three-dimensional fat-suppressed T1-weighted gradient-recalled-echo) and CT immediately after surgery. Rapid mycotoxin analysis in human urine: A pilot study

A simple and rapid method effective for quantitative determination of deoxynivalenol (DON), T-2 toxin (T-2), HT-2 toxin (HT-2), zearalenone (ZEN), ochratoxin A (OTA), aflatoxins (AFs) B(1), B(2), G(1) and G(2) and fumonisins FB(1) and FB(2) in urine was developed. The urine was diluted with phosphate buffer solution (PBS) and thoroughly mixed. For clean-up and extraction, the mixture was loaded on a MYCO 6in1 IAC. However, cancer registry (CR) data are usually made available with substantial delay to ensure best possible completeness of case ascertainment. Mid-sagittal plane detection for advanced physiological measurements in brain scans

Objective The process of diagnosing many neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's and progressive supranuclear palsy, involves the study of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans in order to identify and locate morphological markers that can highlight the health status of the subject. Cell line DNA typing in forensic genetics—the necessity of reliable standards

The incorporation of reference DNA is crucial to the validation of any DNA typing protocol. This paper aims to provide a panel of reference DNAs for actual forensic profiling strategies, i.e. autosomal and gonosomal STR typing as well as mtDNA sequencing. We have characterised three human lymphoid cell lines, GM9947, GM9948 and GM3657, and considered 58 autosomal and gonosomal microsatellites as well as the mitochondrial control region sequence.
